"Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra" by Maxim levy (Israel) is the first prize winning composition of the 2001 Haifa International Competition for Composers.
Special recognition is given to Dan Cahn (Israel) for "Flute Dance" and to Peter Castine (Germany) for "Aperture".
The winning composition will be premiered in the opening concert of the Haifa International Music Festival, Saturday, March 30, 2002.

All compositions will be in the Haifa Music Center's office until 31/12/01.

The Competition's winner:
Maxim Levy (Israel), holds masters degree in composition from Tel Aviv University Music academy, where he studied with Prof. Leon Shidlovski. Mr. Levy won the Academy award in 1988. His compositions were performed by leading Israeli artists and ensembles such as "Nova" Music ensemble, Pianist Natasha Tadson, Kineret String Quartet and more.
Mr. Levy's style combines dodekaphonic and minimalist elements but yet includes also melodic elements which enable his music to create direct communication with his audience.
Mr. Levy devotes his time to composing and to educational activities involving computer program based on Israeli Folk Songs which can be use by music teachers.

The competition's jurors:

Ada Pelleg, Conductor and Music Director of the Haifa Music Center, Formerly, Artistic Director of the Columbia International Music Festival in Maryland. Ms. Pelleg holds a Master's degree in Composition from Indiana University's School of Music in Bloomington. She has extensive teaching experience in the USA and was Chair of the Haifa Municipality Competition for Composers in 1999. She has also been on the Jury of the National Chamber Music Competition in Maryland, USA in 1988 and the Haifa International Flute Competition in 1998 and 2000.

Uri Shoham, Principal flute player laureate of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and one of Israel's most prominent performers and teachers, has played and recorded many contemporary compositions and served as juror on prestigious international competitions as the Rampal Competition in Paris. Mr. Shoham has been a juror in the Haifa International Flute Competition since its inception in 1998.

Emanuel Gruber, Principal Cellist of the Israel Chamber Orchestra and visiting Professor of Cello in the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington. Mr. Gruber plays and teaches extensively in Israel and abroad. He has been a juror in the Francois Shapira Competition , one of the most important competitions in Israel .
